The Jr. Knicks Coach of The Year program, presented by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), celebrates coaches who embody the values that make a positive impact on young basketball players, both on the court and in the community. The Knicks and HSS will choose six nominees, five finalists will each win $2,000 and our Coach of the Year will be awarded $20,000 and be entered as the Knicks representative in the Jr. NBA's National Coach of the Year Program.

Coach Mike Simmel | Founder, Bounce Out the Stigma Project
Coach “Mighty Mike” Simmel battled epilepsy from the age of 2. Playing basketball became his outlet and passion. As a 16-year-old, he was asked to leave a basketball camp because he had a seizure, and that event became the cornerstone of Bounce Out the Stigma.
From Special Education gym class to a high school and college standout, Mike overcame the challenges, and played for the World Famous Harlem Wizards for 13 years! During his time on the team, he started Bounce Out the Stigma Project which began Mike’s path to being involved in the youth special needs community.
Today, Mike’s full-time efforts are to the Bounce Out the Stigma. The program began in 2005 and grew from a small organization to one with a presence in 25 states throughout the country, that has reached over 1000 young people with special needs.
Camps, clinics, school programs, and educational seminars keep Mike involved in working to change the world – one kid at a time! His Mission is simply empowering youth to believe in themselves
